The edition is the single biggest lever on your credit price, and it multiplies everything. Moving from Standard to Enterprise raises the price of every hour every warehouse runs by 50%, forever. It is worth knowing exactly which feature you are buying before you take that step, because for many teams it is one: multi-cluster warehouses.

What each warehouse size costs per hour, and per month if you never turn it off.

Credits per hour from Table 1(a). Dollars are that figure times the credit price. The monthly column is 730 hours, the worst case.

Snowflake's sizing is a clean power of two: every step up doubles both the compute and the price. The monthly column below is deliberately alarming, because it shows what an always-on warehouse costs. Almost nobody should pay that. Warehouses bill per second after a 60-second minimum, and auto-suspend is on by default, so a warehouse that is genuinely busy four hours a day costs roughly a sixth of the figure in the last column.

A multi-cluster warehouse multiplies the rate by the number of clusters currently running, so an Enterprise Medium scaled out to four clusters bills 16 credits an hour, the same as a single X-Large. Picking the right size is the largest single lever on a Snowflake bill, which is why we wrote up how to choose a Snowflake warehouse size separately.

Snowflake publishes its storage discount ladder and hides its compute discount ladder.

This asymmetry is in Snowflake's own legal document, and it changes how you should walk into a negotiation.

Buy a capacity commitment and both meters get cheaper. Only one of them gets cheaper by a published amount. Table 3(a) of the consumption table prints the exact storage price for all seven annual contract value tiers, so you can work out your storage rate before you speak to anyone. Compute is different: the same document says only that capacity credit pricing comes from "the Platform Credit Discount in your Order Form". There is no table. The discount is whatever you negotiate, and Snowflake has chosen not to publish a benchmark.

That matters because compute is the larger meter for nearly every customer. The number you can look up is the small one. The number that decides your bill is the one you have to argue for, with no public reference point to argue from.

There is a second thing worth knowing before you commit. The storage discount does not start at the first dollar of commitment. Tier 1 runs from zero to $1,199,999 of annual contract value and prices storage at $23.00, exactly the same as paying on demand with no commitment at all. Guidance that says "commit and save on storage" is simply wrong below $1.2 million a year, which is most of the market. The ladder tops out at $13.80 per TB for customers spending $40 million or more, which is a maximum discount of exactly 40%.

Not every warehouse burns one credit an hour at X-Small.

Credits per hour at X-Small, from Tables 1(a) to 1(d). The generation you pick changes the rate before you change a single setting.

The Gen 2 line is the one to read twice. A Gen 2 X-Small bills 1.35 credits an hour on AWS and GCP against 1.00 for a standard warehouse, so the faster hardware is 35% more expensive per unit of time and only saves money if your queries finish more than 35% sooner. On Azure the same warehouse bills 1.25, which makes Gen 2 compute about 8% cheaper on Azure than on the other two clouds. That is a genuine cross-cloud price difference for identical functionality, and Snowflake does not draw attention to it anywhere outside the legal table.

"Serverless" on Snowflake means anything from half price to double.

Multipliers from Table 5. One compute-hour is an X-Small warehouse for one hour, then multiplied by the figure below.

Serverless features are the part of a Snowflake bill people find hardest to explain, because they run without anybody starting them and they are not all priced the same way. The spread is a factor of four between the cheapest and the most expensive, so knowing which of these you have switched on matters more than any warehouse setting.

Snowpipe Per GB 0.0037 credits per GB ingested, which is $0.0074 per GB or about $7.40 per TB at the Standard rate.

Several of these also carry a separate cloud services multiplier, and a few add unit charges on top: 0.06 credits per 1,000 files for automated refresh registration, 5 credits per TB replicated on optimized refresh, and 0.05 credits per 1,000 files for archive storage operations.

The 10% rule and the 60-second minimum.

Cloud Services is free until it is 10% of your warehouse spend

Snowflake charges 4.4 credits per hour for the coordination layer that parses, plans and authorizes every query. Then it waives the charge entirely if your daily Cloud Services credits come to 10% or less of the Platform Credits your warehouses burned that day. For a normal workload that means you never pay it.

The teams that do pay it are the ones running huge numbers of cheap metadata operations against tiny warehouses: SHOW commands in a loop, INFORMATION_SCHEMA polling, thousands of tiny COPY statements. The ratio breaks because the denominator is small, not because the numerator is large. Serverless features and Snowpark Container Services compute are excluded from the calculation entirely.

Every resume costs a full minute, whatever you do

Warehouses bill per second, but with a 60-second minimum charged each time compute is provisioned. Snowflake's own worked example: a warehouse that runs 61 seconds, shuts down, restarts and runs for less than a minute is billed for 121 seconds, not 62.

This is why Snowflake advises against setting auto-suspend to one or two minutes on a warehouse that gets frequent queries. It thrashes between suspending and resuming, and every resume pays the minute again. Five to ten minutes is the guidance. It also means a 5X-Large costs $8.53 just to start and immediately stop, because 256 credits an hour is 4.27 credits a minute.

Nobody pays for a seat

Adding readers to Snowflake is free. Compare that with the per-user BI licences that dominate the rest of this category, where a hundred occasional viewers is a five-figure annual line item. If your problem is that too few people can see the data, Snowflake's model is on your side.

Time-based billing punishes slow queries, not big ones

You pay for how long the warehouse runs, not how much it reads. A badly written query that takes ten minutes costs ten times a good one that reads the same data in one. On BigQuery, where you pay per byte scanned, the same two queries cost the same. That difference should shape which warehouse you pick.

The meters you did not switch on are the ones that surprise you

Automatic clustering, search optimization and materialized views all bill at double the compute rate, continuously, in the background. None of them announce themselves on an invoice in a way a non-specialist would recognise. Check what is enabled before you go looking for a warehouse to blame.

The bill is a symptom of who can write SQL

Expensive Snowflake usually means warehouses left running while somebody works out the right query, or one analyst running everybody else's questions in a queue. Both are workflow problems that show up as compute charges. Fixing how questions get answered fixes a surprising share of the invoice.

Snowflake now calls them Platform Credits, and its consumption table states that any older reference to "Snowflake Credits" means the same thing. What a credit costs in dollars depends on your edition, cloud and region.

How is Snowflake priced?

Snowflake uses consumption pricing with no seat licences. You pay for compute by the second while a warehouse is running, for storage by the average terabyte per month, for serverless features by compute-hour times a per-feature multiplier, and for cloud services only if they exceed 10% of your daily warehouse credits. Nothing runs when nobody is querying, so an idle account costs storage only.

Is there a Snowflake pricing calculator?

Snowflake does not publish a calculator that gives you a number. The arithmetic is simple enough to do yourself: credits per hour for your warehouse size, times hours it actually runs, times your credit price, plus terabytes stored times the storage rate. The warehouse cost table on this page does that math for all ten sizes at both the Standard and Enterprise credit prices.

How much is Snowflake storage per TB?

Storage is $23.00 per terabyte per month on demand in AWS US East, US West, Ohio and EU Dublin, rising to $24.50 in Frankfurt and $25.00 in Sydney, Singapore, Tokyo and Canada Central. The rate is charged on compressed bytes and averaged across the days in the month, so loading data mid-month costs a proportion of the monthly figure.

Does Snowflake have a free tier?

No. Snowflake offers a 30-day trial rather than a permanent free tier. You sign up with an email address and no payment details, and the trial ends after 30 days or when the free usage balance is spent, whichever comes first. Storage draws down the same balance. When it ends the account is suspended, and reactivating it requires a credit card.

What is the difference between Standard and Enterprise Snowflake?

Enterprise costs 50% more per credit and adds multi-cluster warehouses, Time Travel extended from one day to ninety, materialized views, and column and row level governance. Multi-cluster is usually the deciding feature: without it a warehouse cannot scale out to absorb query concurrency, so busy teams queue. Materialized views also bill a 2x serverless multiplier to maintain.

How do I reduce Snowflake costs?

Set auto-suspend to a few minutes rather than leaving warehouses running, size down anything oversized, and check what serverless features are billing at 2x in the background. Automatic clustering and search optimization on a frequently written table quietly cost double the compute rate. Then look at who is writing the queries, because idle warehouses and repeated full scans are workflow problems.

Is Snowflake cheaper than BigQuery?

They meter different things, so neither is universally cheaper. BigQuery charges $6.25 per TiB scanned and nothing when idle, which suits sporadic querying. Snowflake charges for warehouse time regardless of how much data a query reads, which suits steady workloads and heavy repeated scans of the same tables. A team running a Medium warehouse eight hours a day pays about $1,408 a month whether it scans 1 TB or 100.
