Choose QuickSight if
Your data already lives in AWS, most of your audience only reads dashboards now and then, or your team is on Macs. The $3 Reader seat and the 500-session pool make a large, occasional audience genuinely cheap, and browser-only authoring sidesteps any desktop problem. Watch the $250 a month enablement fee if you switch on the Amazon Q generative features.

Choose Tableau if
Visual analysis is the job and you have analysts to do it. Tableau is still the benchmark for exploring data visually, its connector list spans every cloud, and you can hire people who already know it. You pay for that: Creator seats are $75 against QuickSight's $24, so it is the premium option, not the budget one.

Both tools assume an analyst builds a dashboard first and everyone else reads it. If your actual bottleneck is that people keep asking one-off questions and waiting days for an answer, another dashboard will not fix it. QuickSight bills the way AWS bills. A Reader is $3 a month, or you buy a pool of sessions, so a wide, occasional audience costs little. SPICE, its in-memory store, keeps dashboards fast without you managing servers. The trade is a thinner chart library and a smaller community than Tableau has.
Tableau earns its price on visual analysis. VizQL and its exploration model let analysts build and interrogate views that QuickSight cannot match, and there is a large pool of people who already know the tool. The catch is cost: a $75 Creator seat is roughly three times a QuickSight Author.
If your stack is AWS and budget matters, QuickSight is the path of least resistance. If visualization depth is the priority and you have analysts, Tableau is worth the premium.

The gap narrows only if you turn on generative BI. QuickSight's Author Pro is $40 a seat and adds a $250 a month per-account enablement fee the moment you enable Amazon Q, which is easy to miss when you price it. Even then, Tableau remains the more expensive platform overall.
The honest comparison counts your real mix. Ten authors and two hundred occasional readers looks very different from fifty full-time analysts. Price the shape you will actually have, and weigh Tableau's visualization depth against QuickSight's lower bill.
Does QuickSight work on a Mac?
Yes. QuickSight is entirely browser-based, with no desktop application to install, so authoring and viewing both work on macOS, Windows or Linux with no workaround.
Tableau is more flexible here than Power BI: Tableau Desktop runs on both Windows and Mac, and Tableau Cloud offers browser authoring too.
