Direct answer

Amazon QuickSight costs $3 per user per month for a Reader and $24 for an Author, with Reader Pro at $20 and Author Pro at $40. A $250 per month per-account infrastructure fee applies once the account has any Pro user, Q&A enabled via topics, or dashboard Q&A enabled. Capacity pricing is the alternative: 500 Reader sessions for $250 a month, up to 1.6 million sessions for $258,000 a year. SPICE in-memory capacity beyond the 10 GB included with each Author costs $0.38 per GB per month. All figures read off aws.amazon.com/quicksight/pricing on 11 August 2026.

What each QuickSight seat costs.

Five role types, two of which quietly switch on a fixed monthly charge for the whole account.

Role Price What the seat can do Worth knowing
Reader $3per user / month Views and interacts with dashboards, downloads data, sets threshold alerts, asks natural-language questions through Q&A. The entry price AWS advertises. A Reader cannot build anything.
Reader Pro $20per user / month Everything a Reader does, plus AI executive summaries, generative data stories and scenario analysis. Triggers the $250 monthly account fee. Nearly 7x a plain Reader.
Author $24per user / month Connects to data sources, builds datasets, dashboards and reports, shares them, uses Q&A. Includes 10 GB of SPICE capacity. The seat anyone who actually builds analysis needs.
Author Pro $40per user / month Author capabilities plus the generative AI feature set, automation and advanced collaboration. Carries a 10 GB SPICE credit. Triggers the $250 monthly account fee.
Admin / Admin Pro $24 / $40per user / month Administrative capabilities on top of the matching Author role. AWS prices admins at the same rate as Author and Author Pro.

AWS also lists a limited-time promotion: in regions where the newer capabilities are available, Authors get promotional access to the full Quick Enterprise feature set until 31 December 2026. Confirm it applies to your region before you build a budget on it.

›_ the line that changes the answer

The $250 a month you will not find on the seat table.

This is the single most important fact in QuickSight pricing, and it is a footnote on the AWS page.

AWS charges a $250 per month per-account infrastructure fee if your account meets any of three conditions: it has at least one Pro user, it has Q&A enabled via topics, or it has dashboard Q&A enabled. One condition is enough. The fee is charged once per account, not per user, and it does not scale down for small teams.

That structure has an obvious consequence people discover after signing up. A five-person deployment with two Authors and three Readers costs $57 a month. Switch on Q&A so those five people can ask questions in plain English, and the same deployment costs $307 a month. The features did not get five times better; the pricing model simply has a floor that assumes you are large.

Read the other way, the fee is close to irrelevant at scale. Spread across 200 people it is $1.25 per person per month. QuickSight is priced for organizations rolling analytics out widely, and the small-team economics are collateral damage rather than the design.

what triggers it

  • 01At least one Reader Pro or Author Pro user on the account
  • 02Q&A enabled via topics
  • 03Dashboard Q&A enabled

$250 a month is $3,000 a year, fixed. Divide it by your headcount before you compare QuickSight to anything else.

What real teams actually pay.

Six configurations priced from the published numbers above. Arithmetic only, no estimates and no negotiated discounts.

Scenario Seats priced Per month Per year What it tells you
5 people, no AI 2 Authors at $24, 3 Readers at $3 $57 $684 The genuinely cheap case. No Pro seats, no Q&A, so no $250 fee.
5 people, with Q&A on Same seats, plus the $250 account fee $307 $3,684 Turning on Q&A multiplies the bill by 5.4 without adding a single user.
25 people, no AI 5 Authors at $24, 20 Readers at $3 $180 $2,160 Still the cheapest per-seat BI on the market at this shape.
25 people, AI for the builders 5 Author Pro at $40, 20 Readers at $3, plus $250 $510 $6,120 Five Pro seats add $80 of seat cost and $250 of account fee.
100 people, mostly readers 10 Authors at $24, 90 Readers at $3 $510 $6,120 Reader economics is why QuickSight wins large read-only rollouts.
100 people on Power BI Pro 100 seats at $14, for contrast $1,400 $16,800 Microsoft charges every viewer a full seat. QuickSight does not.

Excludes SPICE beyond the allocation included with each Author, paginated reports, and alert evaluation. The Power BI row is list price for comparison and is priced separately on QuickSight vs Power BI.

Buy usage in bulk instead of provisioning named users. Built for embedded analytics and rollouts where you cannot list your users in advance.

Three details decide whether capacity pricing beats seats for you. A session is a 30-minute period, so a viewer who opens a dashboard three times across a day may burn three sessions rather than one. Capacity pricing is required if you want programmatic dashboard refresh for near real-time rendering. And an annual capacity commitment is what buys the right to remove the "Powered by Quick" branding, which matters if you are embedding dashboards in a product your own customers pay for.

›_ what the seat price excludes

Four line items that land on the bill later.

None of these appear in the headline $3 and $24 figures, and all four are metered.

SPICE in-memory capacity

$0.38 per GB per month

10 GB is included with every provisioned Author, and Author Pro carries a 10 GB credit. Readers bring none. Past that you buy capacity by the gigabyte, and a single Enterprise SPICE dataset tops out at 1 billion rows per TB.

Paginated reports

$500 per month, or $24,000 per year

The monthly plan includes 500 report units and charges $1.00 for each extra. The annual plan covers 4,000 units a month for $24,000 with $0.50 overage. A report unit is up to 100 pages or 100 MB, so a 200-page report counts as two.

Alerts and anomaly detection

$0.50 down to $0.05 per 1,000 metrics evaluated

Priced on metrics evaluated, not on alerts fired. The first million metrics cost $0.50 per thousand, falling to $0.25, $0.10 and finally $0.05 above 100 million. One metric is one value or trend checked at one point in time, so a frequently refreshed alert on a wide dataset adds up quietly.

Standard Edition

$9 per user per month annually, $12 monthly

Only available through the CreateAccountSubscription API, not the console signup. Includes 10 GB of SPICE per user with additional capacity at $0.25 per GB. Aimed at individuals and small groups who just want to publish dashboards.

›_ honest read

When QuickSight pricing wins, and when it does not.

We build a competing tool, so weigh this accordingly. The numbers above are AWS's own and you can check them.

It wins on wide, read-only rollouts

Nobody else charges $3 for a viewer. If you have ten people building dashboards and hundreds reading them, and your data already sits in Redshift, S3 or Athena, QuickSight will be the cheapest credible option by a wide margin, and it bills through an AWS account you already reconcile. A hundred people costs $6,120 a year against $16,800 on Power BI Pro seats.

It loses on small teams that want the AI

The $250 monthly account fee is fixed, so on a five-person or ten-person deployment the natural-language layer costs more than every seat combined. If plain-English questions are the reason you are shopping at all, and you are under about 25 people, QuickSight is being priced for someone else's org chart, and the AI is the expensive part rather than the cheap one.

It still needs somebody to model the data

Q&A in QuickSight runs on topics, which somebody has to define, curate and keep aligned with the underlying tables. That work does not appear on any pricing page, and on most deployments the person doing it costs more than the license. Budget for the maintainer or the topics go stale and the answers go wrong.

You might be pricing the wrong category

If the job is a governed dashboard suite a hundred people read every Monday, buy BI. If the job is the ad-hoc question nobody built a report for, an AI data analyst answers it directly against your database with no dataset to model first. Plenty of teams run one of each, which is usually the honest answer.

Agentsql connects read-only to the Postgres, MySQL, Snowflake or BigQuery database you already run, turns a plain-English question into SQL, executes it and shows the SQL every time so an analyst can check the logic. Compare it head to head on QuickSight vs Tableau, see every vendor's list price side by side on our BI tools comparison, or read how the text-to-SQL layer works.

›_ frequently asked

QuickSight pricing questions, answered.

How much does Amazon QuickSight cost?

QuickSight costs $3 per month per Reader and $24 per month per Author, with Reader Pro at $20 and Author Pro at $40. A $250 monthly per-account infrastructure fee applies as soon as the account has any Pro user, Q&A enabled via topics, or dashboard Q&A. Prices read off the AWS pricing page on 11 August 2026.

What is the $250 QuickSight fee?

It is a per-account infrastructure fee AWS charges monthly if your account has at least one Pro user, Q&A enabled via topics, or dashboard Q&A enabled. It is charged once per account rather than per user, so it hurts small teams hardest: on a five-person deployment it can outweigh every seat combined.

Is QuickSight cheaper than Power BI?

For read-heavy teams, clearly yes. A hundred people with 10 authors costs $6,120 a year on QuickSight against $16,800 for 100 Power BI Pro seats, because QuickSight charges viewers $3 rather than a full seat. The picture narrows once you enable Pro features and pick up the $250 monthly account fee.

Does QuickSight have a free tier?

AWS offers a free trial rather than a permanently free production tier. There is no free plan comparable to Looker Studio. Self-hosted Metabase Open Source and Apache Superset remain the genuinely free options in this category, trading license fees for the engineering time to run them.

What is QuickSight capacity pricing?

Instead of provisioning named users, you buy Reader sessions or Amazon Q questions in bulk. Reader capacity starts at $250 a month for 500 sessions and runs to $258,000 a year for 1.6 million. A session is a 30-minute period. It suits embedded analytics and large rollouts where you cannot enumerate users in advance.

How much does Amazon Q in QuickSight cost?

Q&A is included in the Reader and Author seat prices, but enabling it triggers the $250 monthly account fee. Buying Q questions as capacity instead costs $250 a month for 500 questions, $18,000 a year for 60,000, or $120,000 a year for 600,000, with per-question overage from $0.50 down to $0.20.

What is SPICE and does it cost extra?

SPICE is the in-memory engine QuickSight queries instead of hitting your source database repeatedly. Every provisioned Author includes 10 GB and Author Pro carries a 10 GB credit. Beyond the included allocation it costs $0.38 per GB per month, and you can add or remove capacity at any point in the month.

Is QuickSight worth it for a small team?

At $684 a year for five people with no AI, it is the cheapest published BI pricing available. The calculation flips the moment you want the AI features, because the $250 monthly account fee is fixed regardless of headcount and adds $3,000 a year to a bill that was $684. Price both configurations before deciding.

Does QuickSight charge for viewers?

Yes, but only $3 per Reader per month, which is the lowest viewer price of any major BI platform. Power BI charges viewers a full $14 Pro seat unless you buy Premium capacity, and Tableau charges $15 per Viewer. That $3 Reader is the single strongest argument for QuickSight in a wide, read-only rollout.

Why is it now called Amazon Quick Sight?

AWS restyled the product name and its own pricing page now writes it as Amazon Quick Sight, alongside tier names like Quick Professional and Quick Enterprise. Most people still search and write it as QuickSight, and the service, the console and the pricing are the same product either way.

No seat math. Just ask your data.
